Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology This Season.

The Championships court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the ability to question certain decisions from the chair umpire, echoing the practice already in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move follows just a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to review specific situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Other Changes

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
