The Video Platform Grants The Community Authority to Limit Artificial Intelligence-Made Content in Timelines

Users will soon have a new feature that allows them to cut down on the quantity of artificial intelligence-produced videos appearing in their streams. This move comes as the platform disclosed that it presently contains in excess of 1 bn content made with AI.

Pilot Phase and Launch

This change is being tested over the following weeks before a widespread release. This advancement comes amid a surge in content created by AI, fueled by recent AI video creators.

The Broader AI Trend

Recent reports that almost 10% of the most rapidly expanding content creators on a popular video site primarily display AI-generated videos. A considerable share of this material is considered low-quality AI content, a term for substandard, mass-produced content that is typically illogical or surreal.

“We know from our community that a lot of users appreciate content made with AI tools, from computer-generated images to informative clips, and we intend to provide users the option to see more or less of that, according to their own preferences,” said a company executive.

Volume and Proportions

The service announced that there are currently 1.3 billion videos on its network identified as artificially created. Collectively, over 100 mn pieces of content are added to the app each day, making clips made by AI a limited portion of its overall inventory.

How to Adjust Settings

Users will be able to reduce or increase the volume of AI content they watch by opening the “manage topic” feature in the platform and choosing AI-made media. Additional categories that can already be controlled under the setting cover politics, style, cosmetics, and dance.

Platform Guidelines

The platform’s guidelines require users to label lifelike artificially created content, and it forbids dangerous deepfakes of well-known individuals or critical incidents. Any realistic AI-generated clip that is unmarked can be taken down under its terms of service.

Furthermore, the platform will now apply an artificially created watermark to content produced via its own AI tools, or detected by an industry-wide initiative for spotting AI-generated material. This measure is aimed to deter users from attempting to evade the disclosure requirement.

Responsible AI Funding

The platform is furthermore establishing a $2m awareness program for experts and groups to produce educational content about using AI responsibly. This program will assist non-profit groups specializing in educating programming and robotics.

Moderation Strategy

The video-sharing app has defended its safety measures, following controversy over plans to lay off hundreds of review team members in Britain. The company is planning to eliminate hundreds of positions in its user protection department in the UK capital, with worker representatives and digital protection specialists voicing alarm that people are being substituted by AI moderation.

A senior executive clarified that human moderation would remain essential, but AI can safeguard staff by filtering out the most graphic content prior to it is viewed by people. The company announced a significant reduction in explicit and harmful content reviewed by safety staff over the past year due to the use of its machine learning processes.

It is vital to balance people and machines to keep the platform safe,” she said. “We’ll have humans as involved in the system, but we also think it’s highly necessary to minimize viewing of unsafe media as rapidly, which is the area in which a significant AI assistance is making a difference work at speed.”
