Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

As any significant honors show draws close, one notices a clamor to include fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of followers with niche passions.

Another commentator has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. The same goes for tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial and important of all. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that cinema institutions avoid this approach. However, it represents an essential concession within the realm of gaming, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards currently feature classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications actually cover numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.

Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated in any category that year
  • Another creative title received no nominations in 2019
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few brain-teasers scraped into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among the most-played games worldwide continuing this trend for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals famous sandbox experiences claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
